Spokane’s Megan Lindsay named first-ever NWPL Player of the Week

BREMERTON, WA— The Northwest Premier League announces that Megan Lindsay of the Spokane Shadow has been named the Player of the Week in the new elite amateur statewide women’s soccer league.

Lindsay, a pro in Norway.

Megan scored a first-half hat trick (3 goals) and an assist for the Shadow as they won their debut NWPL match 5-2 in Yakima against Yakima United FC. Megan will receive a 2016 NWPL collector’s league scarf in recognition of her accomplishment.

“It was a complete team effort that got us the win on Sunday with many players having important moments and great performances in the game,” says Shadow head coach Kevin Moon. “Megan’s experience really showed in the way she played and led the team. Scoring such a wonderful header in the opening moments of the game really helped settle us in early. Her three goals combined with her defensive efforts in the midfield during the second half helped us to get an important three points on the road.”

Lindsay, a Spokane native who went to Seattle Pacific University, has had an extensive pro career with multiple clubs overseas, most-recently in Norway.

On Sunday in Yakima all three Lindsay goals were completely different. The early tally came when Sarah Cox beat a defender in the right corner and sent a ball in toward the six, finding the head of Lindsay, who calmly nodded it inside the left post in the fourth minute.

A great individual play from Lindsay doubled the score in the 16th when she took the ball at midfield and drove all the way to the box before she cut inside a defender and deftly placed a shot off the underside of the bar that bounced over the line and then back up inside the roof of the goal.

Lindsay turned provider shortly after in the 24th when she connected with Marissa Mykines, who ripped a shot from about 25 yards into the left side of the goal.

With just seconds remaining in the half Lindsay nabbed her third on a short ball forward from Kellie Zakrzewski that split the defenders and put her on a run to goal. Lindsay drove past a defender and sent a slow roller inside the left post from 17 yards.

Lindsay’s hat-trick, the first in NWPL history, was a historic repeat for the Shadow as Mike Ramos was the first to accomplish the feat in EPLWA on July 19, 2014.

“It’s an honor to be recognize as the league’s first player of the week,” says Megan.

“My first goal was a header that came from a great cross by Sarah Cox in the first 4 minutes of play. I was fortunately in the right place at the right time! The second one came from a bad pass from between two Yakima defenders and I chipped the keeper. My third goal was from a smart pass from my other teammate Kellie Zakrzewski that split the two last defenders. I got a shot off that was past the goal that went to the left post.”

Lindsay agrees with the sentiments of her coach. “Thanks for the recognition but I believe it was a team effort that got us the win on Sunday. They were the real stars!”

The Shadow are back in Spokane for their first NWPL home match on Saturday May 7 at Spokane Falls Stadium when they host the Twin City Union at 4:30 PM.
