Yakima’s Shallise Rodriguez is NWPL Player of Week

BREMERTON, WA— The Northwest Premier League announces that Yakima United’s Shallise Rodriguez is the latest NWPL Player of the Week for her performance in the Hoppers’ 5-2 win over Fuerza FC on June 5. She’ll be getting a 2016 NWPL league scarf to commemorate her achievement.

Matches are often won and lost in mere seconds. It’s rare though to see what Shallise Rodriguez managed to accomplish in such a short time span last Sunday.

The Hoppers and Fuerza were tied at 2-2 as the match went into first-half added time. When the players left the pitch for the break, it was 4-2 Yakima.

NWPL Primary Crest“Shallise is a true #9, she can score all different types of goals, her work rate is great, she loves to press defences, and play in between the lines,” says Hoppers Head Coach Josh Vega. “What she did for us on Sunday was just that, she injected some energy and popped up with two goals at probably the most crucial point in the game just before half time. Her first was through sheer determination, she gambled on a ball that the keeper was unable to collect and it paid off, the second came off a nice combination build up from the midfield with some quick one touch passing, Kaley found Shallise in front of the goal and she showed how calm she can be by slotting it in.”

Her first strike was the eventual match-winner. Her second was a back-breaker. It was a great way to return to the pitch for a player who worked hard to get back there.

“This was actually Shallise’s first appearance for us, she’s had a pretty rough start to the season physically,” says Vega. “She suffered a bad sprain in our final pre-season tune up against Central Washington University, and then experienced a concussion which kept her out of even training for a number of weeks. In fact, this last Tuesday was her only full training session since April. So to come on, play for about 60 minutes and contribute with two very important goals is pretty remarkable. We’re happy to have her back and hopefully the injuries are behind her and she can continue to get us on the score sheet.”

Players of the Week are awarded with a 2016 NWPL scarf.
