BREMERTON, WA — The Northwest Premier League (NWPL) announces that Seattle Stars goalkeeper Gina Cardenas is the Player of the Week for June 19, 2016.
Seattle Stars FC were locked in a 0-0 standoff with South Sound FC last Sunday at Curtis High School. Gina Cardenas was called upon a few times earlier to keep her side even, but in the 80th minute it looked like the Shock would take the lead.
Suddenly there was a break for the home side and Cardenas found herself one-on-one with a South Sound attacker. It was make or break and Cardenas saved the chance in what was eventually a 0-0 final. That one play might have changed the course of the title race in the NWPL.
“The game was very even,” says Stars owner Margarito Avila. “If there was going to be a winner in this match, was going to be if someone made a mistake.” When the moment came Cardenas came up big. “She did have other saves, but the one-on-one was the biggest for our side,” he says.
Stars Head Coach Angela Celedon agrees. “Gina had an awesome game for us.”
Gina now has 2 complete-match shut outs on the season, tied for the league lead in that area.
