ANNA GENTILE – OFFENSE (WPSS Shock)

Washington Premier South Sound was in desperate need of a goal. The club had begun their second season in the NWPL by being shutout twice. Forward Anna Gentile was able to deliver the goals (she scored twice) the Shock needed in a 3-1 win on Sunday May 21 at the Olympic Force.

ssfc-500“Anna is a key member of this team and led from the front the whole game,” says Shock Head Coach Kevin Skinner. “She gave the Force back line no time to play which led to the first goal – creating pressure on the Force defense – then capitalizing on it. Anna’s second goal was similar. We spoke at half about giving their center backs no time to play and Anna read a through ball well. She reacted earlier than the center half and finished well for us to go two up. She was at the center of a lot of what we did well, not just the goals but also off the ball. Hopefully she can go on a run now.”

ADDY ECKSTROM – DEFENSE (Yakima United)

The Seattle Stars had not lost a match all season. Already up 1-0 on Yakima United on the Hoppers home pitch last Saturday, the Stars stepped up to the penalty spot with a chance to put the home side away. Instead, Yakima goalkeeper Addy Eckstrom saved the shot — and the day for YUFC. The Hoppers went on to score twice and give Seattle their only loss so far, 2-1.

alt1-full“Addy played very well Saturday, as she usually does,” says Hoppers Head Coach Josh Vega. “She came up big on a few one on one situations, and her save on the penalty was a big turning point in the game, keeping the score at 1-0 and allowing us to go on and win 2-1.

The Hoppers are solid in goal, Vega says. “Addy is such an important part of our team, we’re blessed to have two outstanding goalkeepers in our squad. She’s a big leader in our defense, she always works hard in training and you see that translating on the pitch, she’s never satisfied and is always eager to learn and improve. I’m very happy for her to be getting this well deserved recognition.”
