BREMERTON, WA— The Northwest Premier League today announces that Callie Best of the Spokane Shadow (Offense) and Kat Sanchez of Fuerza FC (Defense) are the NWPL Players of the Week for matches played the weekend of July 2, 2017.

CALLIE BEST (OFFENSE) – Spokane Shadow

BestCallie Best (Gonzaga) played an integral role in Spokane’s sweep of their matches last weekend. The Shadow kept the pressure on the first place Seattle Stars by winning twice at the Spokane Polo Grounds.

Best was instrumental in the Spokane attack. Free to move throughout the attacking third positionally, she helped maintain possession and link up many of the scoring opportunities as the Shadow recorded a pair of four-goal wins. Her efforts were big in the first win over Twin City Union, despite no credit statistically, and she tallied a goal and assist in the second against one the team’s most competitive foes WPSS Shock. She scored on a long strike for the opener and made a brilliant play to set up the second goal, turning as she received a throw and charging to the endline to draw out the keeper, setting up a Kaelyn Barnes’ goal.

kat_sanchezKatarina (Kat) Sanchez (Northwest) continues to impress opposing coaches. Last weekend marked the second time an opposing coach has submitted her name as a candidate for defensive player of the week for her performance in goal. This time she gets the honor thanks to a shut out over Yakima and a dazzing display the next day that kept her team in the hunt against Seattle.

“Kat played the full 90 minutes of both games of this last weekends double header,” says Fuerza FC VP of Operations Matt Neel. “Kat’s performances this week showed incredible anticipation and reflexes. Her efforts were vital in not only securing the clean sheet against Yakima United but in keeping Fuerza in the game for the full 90 minutes against the Seattle Stars. Her presence in goal gives the rest of the team confidence on defense, allowing them to not only play aggressive defensively but comfortable in possession as well.”
