Olivia Larson’s game winner with five minutes to play led Snohomish County to their second Northwest Premier League Indoor championship with a 5-4 victory over the visiting Tacoma Galaxy on Saturday night in Snohomish. Mariah Roggow scored twice for the Steeleheads, who have lost just two games in two NWPLi seasons. Snohomish opened the scoring with two first quarter goals, the first on M’ily Morton’s strike at the 11:19 mark and then a goal by Kiara Williams five minutes later. Stephanie Spiekerman got Tacoma on the board with 2:03 left in the first quarter and the first 15 minutes came to an end with Snohomish leading 2-1. Both defenses clamped down in the second quarter with neither keeper – Kaitlin MacKenzie (Snohomish) and Matisse Hemingway – allowing a goal to keep the scored 2-1 Snohomish at the half. Mariah Roggow scored her first goal of the game at the 11:15 mark of the third quarter to give Snohomish a 3-1 lead. But Tacoma came roaring back near the end of the quarter with goals by Julia Causbie and Meredith Udovich and the two teams went into the fourth quarter all tied up at 3-3. Roggow scored her second goal with 10:54 left to play to give the Steelheads a 4-3 lead, but Kayley Cruz’s strike just 40 seconds later tied the game back up at 4-4. Olivia Larson struck five minutes later to put the Steeleheads up 5-4 with 5:26 left to play and Snohomish held on over the final five minutes to capture their second straight championship game win over the Galaxy. The Steelheads finished the season with six wins and just one loss to the Galaxy two weeks ago. They went 7-1-1 in 2022. The Galaxy finished their season at 4-3. |
